Cross Country

Hello to student-athletes and parents — welcome to cross country!

Head coach: John Bacon (email – john.bacon@apsva.us). Assistant coaches: Coach Roz, Coach Troiano and Coach McNeill.

Practices will begin the week of August 3 and will take place Monday-thru-Friday from 7:30-9AM for four weeks until the start of the school year. 
Captains and seniors will report to the track on Monday, Aug. 3. Ninth-graders will join them on Tuesday, Aug. 4 and all student-athletes are all-in on Wednesday, Aug. 5. EVERYONE MUST SHOW UP DRESSED AND FIT TO RUN ON THEIR FIRST DAY! 

We are making some changes this season to increase commitment, including a requirement that all student-athletes complete a 1.5 mile run — without walking — at the end of the second week of practice.

Here is a minimum, super basic, 5-week summer preparation guide to help get you ready to go from day one!

June 29-July 5: walk/run 2 miles 3 of these days
July 6-12: walk/run 3 miles 3 days
July 13-19: walk/run 3 miles 4 days
July 20-26: jog/run 3 miles 3 days
July 27-Aug. 2: jog/run 3 miles 4 days.
Aug. 3-7: First week of practice!
 
Note that once school starts, practices will take place 3:35-5PM.
 
Summer camp options: Some parents have inquired about summer running camps. These are not mandatory but can be fun! Coach McNeill — who oversees our varsity XC runners and serves as head cross country coach at Marymount University — conducts inexpensive, weekly camps in July for kids across the region. Some camps a bit farther away include Capon Ridge in Yellow Spring, WVA and Blue Ridge in Harrisonburg, VA.
